Sheryl Crow is following in the footsteps of Barry Manilow, George Straight and James Taylor in producing a Christmas CD marketed by Hallmark in 2008. These CDs are typically offered as an exclusive in Hallmark stores for one year before being repackaged for general distribution.

“I had been wanting to do this for awhile, so when the opportunity came up I just kind of jumped at it.” Crow said. “I love Christmas music; every year we have this ritual after the Christmas Eve service, 40 or 50 people come over the house and we play Christmas music. We pretty much rely on the same Christmas music every year, and every year I’ve said, “I’m gonna make some Christmas music of my own.” There’s been lots of amazing Christmas records that have come out, but where Christmas music is concerned there’s always room for everyone.”

“The album is just gorgeous. It’s kind of a humble record; it’s very sweet and innocent and a little bit of a throwback to maybe the ’60s or ’70s in production. It’s definitely a departure from any Christmas record I’ve ever heard. There’s just a beautifully lush, kind of soulful version of “Oh Holy Night.” And “All Through the Night,” which is a traditional carol, actually; [Bottrell] put together a beautiful suite arrangement, which is a little bit of a departure from the stoic hymn version. But the lyrics for it are fantastic. And then there are just a few songs that are fun and everybody loves them-”Merry Christmas, Baby” and “White Christmas” and stuff like that.”

Much-touted emotional reverb-loving Scotch-rockers Glasvegas are planning to record a Christmas album, according to The Daily Record, using songs they began writing in New York, which frontman James Allan thought weren’t quite right for the album (due early September).

Having wanted to record in a cathedral, they’ll be heading out to Transylvania, which is, according to NME.com, “famous city in the eastern European country of Romania”.

While I’m aware that few eastern Europeans employ articles, it seems excessively accommodating to mimmick that linguistic trait when discussing the slavs et al. in our own (superiour) language.

And Transylvania is almost as big as England, and is definitely not a city.

Still, a Christmas album - they’re usually good aren’t they?

Faith Hill threw the coolest party of the scorching CMA Music Festival week for about 130 industry folks who were given an exclusive first listen to her upcoming Christmas album, Joy to the World.

As snow quietly fell on video screens throughout the Global Cafe on Friday, partygoers consumed iced gingerbread men and mini peppermint ice cream cones while festivalgoers sweated in the 90-degree heat outside. Tables were adorned with centerpieces featuring Christmas ornaments.

“We planned that, a Christmas record on the hottest day in Nashville for the year or maybe the last few years,” joked Hill, who was in the lineup for the Friday night LP Field show. It was her first scheduled appearance at the festival in a decade.

Hill began recording the Christmas album about three years ago, but then took a break to tour for much of two years before finishing it. She recently played the completed album for executives at her label, Warner Bros. Records.

“It’s so very special to me, very spiritual, kind of a throwback to the 1950s-’60s Christmas music,” she said of the album, which has soaring orchestrations and impressive vocals.

She was joined by the Nashville Symphony and conductor David Campbell, as well as producers Byron Gallimore and Dann Huff.

“We just had the best time making this album. You’re going to hear the London Boys Choir and they were phenomenal,” she said.

The album’s single is “A Baby Changes Everything,” which was written by Craig Wiseman; his wife, KK Wiseman; and Tim Nichols. “It’s an extraordinary piece of work,” Hill said. ” … (KK) is a minister and it originated from a sermon that she was going to present to a church.”

Hill was joined at the event by her three daughters. “My daughters Maggie and Audrey were going to come down here and serve you guys ice cream, but they said, ‘They’ve already eaten ice cream. What do we do? This is really boring,’ ” Hill said with a laugh.

The 36-minute album contains songs such as “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town,” “O Come All Ye Faithful” and “Little Drummer Boy.”

If you´ve always had a soft spot in your heart for American Idol competitors who were voted off before their talent was truly realized, or simply just love holiday music—no matter what time of year—you´ll be happy to know that, yes, Virginia, there IS a singing Santa!

Chenoa Records has done it again—taken the best of the best of AI hopefuls and let their hot vocals loose on holiday favorites and an original or two.

Last year, the first American Christmas hit the scene, a memorable CD featuring an all-star cast of idols putting their best voice forward. Classics like “Silent Night” sung by Frenchie Davis, “Jingle Bell Rock” by Perla and “White Christmas” by RJ Helton blend beautifully with contemporary holiday tunes, including “Santa Baby” by Lisa Leuschner, “Grown Up Christmas List” by Ayla Brown and an original by one of the most original Idols herself, Nikki McKibbin.

On May 19, 2008, Chenoa Records proudly announces a CD launch party celebrating American Christmas and American Christmas 2; a two-disc soon-to-be classic that will be released November 11—just in time for the 2008 holiday season.

The event is already generating a buzz in Hollywood, with media from Access Hollywood to Extra! already planning their coverage. Participating former AI contestants include Alexis Stone Lopez (Season1 Finalist), Angela Peel (Season 1 Finalist), Ayla Brown (Season 5 Finalist), Frenchie Davis (Season 2 Contestant), Jasmine Trias (Season 3 2nd runner-up to Carrie Underwood), Joe Murenas (Season 4 Finalist), Julia DeAmato (Season 2 Finalist), Lindsey Cardinale (Season 4 Finalist), Lisa Leuschner (Season 2 Finalist), Maynard Triplets (Season 4 Contestants), Melissa McGee (Season 5 Finalist), Mikalah Gordon (Season 4 Finalist), Nikki Mckibbin (Season 1, 2nd runner-up to Kelly Clarkson), Perla (Season 6 Contestant), Ricky Smith (Season 2, 8th Place Finalist), Trenyce (Season 2, 5th Place Finalist), Vonzel Solomon (Season 3, 5th Place Finalist), and RJ Helton (Season 1, 5th Place Finalist).

Performances by Alexis Stone Lopez, Nikki McKibbin and RJ Helton will set the tone for the exciting Idol evening, strategically planned to take place on the eve of the American Idol Season 7 finals. The venue for Christmas in May will be the NOKIA Theatre across from Staples Center.

Capitalizing on the infectious Idol energy that will be in the air, Christmas in May is an event not to be missed if you are an AI fan, and is further proof that success is attainable even if you´re not the last one standing on the American Idol stage.

Craig Jessop, the director and conductor of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, doesn’t have a clue about self-promotion. Won’t sit down to do interviews for stories about himself. Won’t take credit. Insists on sharing the baton and the stage. Has a humble streak about as big as the “Hallelujah Chorus.” Even now, he is cringing as he reads this, so let’s move on to …

… Mack Wilberg, the choir’s associate director. Same story. He is loathe even to come out and take a bow on stage and has to be coaxed into it. After performances he disappears to who knows where. He’d rather be composing music in a basement fruit room, which is what he used to do when he lived in Draper.

Wilberg and Jessop are doing a pretty good job of going through life almost anonymously, which isn’t easy when you consider the attention the choir is getting these days. The MoTabs’ Christmas CD, a recording of last year’s Christmas concert with the great Norwegian soprano Sissel, is No. 1 on the traditional Christmas charts. It was nominated for two Grammys last week.

The MoTabs’ annual Christmas concert has become so big that they will fill the 21,000-seat Conference Center four times this week. It has become a national event, with people flying in from around the country to attend. Because of the high demand, tickets were given away in a lottery this year. There were more than 1 million requests for tickets. Most must watch the performance a year later on TV — it is PBS’s top-rated show in December.

You know things are going well when the MoTabs are packing the old Tabernacle for rehearsals, which forced them to move to the Conference Center to accommodate them all.

So, Mr. Jessop, how about an interview? “As long as it’s not about me,” he says politely.

So this is not about him, or Wilberg, because, in their view, they are merely caretakers and the choir is not about one person, which makes sense since a choir is a choir. But let’s note this: Under the leadership of Jessop and Wilberg since 1999, the choir has discovered new possibilities for what the MoTabs can be.

As anyone who has attended their annual Christmas concerts in recent years can attest, this is not your father’s MoTabs.

For one thing, they have embraced musical diversity. They sing songs from the Caribbean, Catalonia, England, Wales, Norway, France and Africa, etc., as well as traditional African-American gospel songs. There have been acts with drums, bagpipes, World War I soldiers and dancers in the aisles.

People almost fell out of their chairs a couple of years ago when the choir sang and — what’s this?! — danced in front of their seats while singing “Betelehemu,” a Nigerian Christmas carol. It’s the closest thing to a boogie you’ll ever see from the MoTabs.

They also perform these days with big names — readings from Walter Cronkite, Roma Downey, Claire Bloom, Charles Osgood, Peter Graves and Angela Lansbury — and headline singing acts — Sissel, Tony Award-winner Audra McDonald, American soprano Renee Fleming, Welsh baritone Bryn Terfel, American opera diva Frederica von Stade and Gladys Knight without her Pips.

The ideas for songs come from the guest artists and from the vast collected experience of Wilberg and Jessop. Wilberg, for instance, learned “Betelehemu” from a man who sang the song to him and showed him the traditional dance that accompanies it from memory; from that, Wilberg was able to put musical notes on paper for the choir. When they performed it for the first time, “People acted like the Jazz had just scored the winning basket,” says longtime choir member Beth Breinholt. “We were stunned.”

For his part, Jessop has collected music from around the world in his travels as an Air Force officer, as well as his work with military and civilian choirs and bands.

“We’ve always tried to celebrate the diversity of the planet and the people who are all united in this faith and belief in the birth of Christ,” says Jessop. “They all put their own spin on it.”

And Jessop adds his own spin. It helps that he doesn’t operate in a classical vacuum. He was in the audience during James Taylor’s last concert appearance in Utah, and he has been known to tell the choir during practice sessions, “C’mon, sing it like the Supremes!” Or, “C’mon, be SheDaisy!” He’s worked with the likes of Sting, Oak Ridge Boys and Yo-Yo Ma.

For Jessop, nothing tops that moment when he stands in front of the choir, leaning into the face of 360 heavenly voices. “I’m the most blessed man on the planet,” he says. “I never take it for granted. I remember when (Utah Symphony conductor) Keith Lockhart led the choir. He looked at me with the biggest smile on his face. He said it was like standing in front of a force of nature, like Niagara Falls or the Grand Canyon. It’s one of the wonders of the world.”

I should start this off with some important information.

From when I was very young I have been a fan of Bing Crosby. His music and movies are some of my favorites. At a very early age he became my idol. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say that Bing Crosby is the father of American Christmas music. I believe that all of the Christmas music that we listen to today, all of the artists that record Christmas albums are all a result of what Bing did with Christmas music beginning very early in his career. His Recording of “White Christmas” for many years was the highest selling single of all time. In fact it appeared in the top ten on the charts around Christmastime, almost twenty years in a row, Bing was the only artist to achieve such a fete. It appeared in the top ten on the British charts as recently as 1998.

I had the opportunity to have a conversation with Bing’s wife, Kathryn Crosby this week and may I say it was one of the biggest thrills I’ve ever had.

She is vibrant and positive, as upbeat and cordial as I remember her on those many Crosby family Christmas specials that were an absolute tradition and event in our house as I grew up. It was not an interview, but rather felt like I was chatting with an old family friend. It’s not an uncommon occurrence for Mrs. Crosby, to have someone feel as if she’s an old friend, because she has selflessly shared herself and her life with Bing with all of us in ways that we could never thank her enough for. She’s written three books about her life with Bing. The first, “Bing and Other Things” published in 1967. Next was her book “My Life with Bing” in 1983 and finally “My Last Years with Bing” in 2002.

As Mrs. Crosby writes, one can truly feel how much she loved Bing and how much he loved her. As I spoke with her a full thirty years since Bing passed away on a golf course in Spain, it is still clear that she loves him as much, if not more and that she still misses him dearly. The reverence with which she describes Bing is heartwarming and in many ways humorous.

She shared a story with me where she was actually auditioning for Bing, something that Rosemary Clooney thought she was crazy for doing. She sang the song from “Peter Pan” that the character of Peter sings about flying. At the end of the song she asked Bing what he thought, he said, “hey you’re pretty good at that!” Wanting further information Kathryn asked Bing what his favorite part was. In typical Bing fashion he answered, “I really loved the way you crowed!”

Bing was a master. He made everything he touched turn to gold and made it look effortless. He moved audiences in ways that artists today could only dream of. Mrs. Crosby described what she saw as one of the reasons. “It’s the songs! A fine melody, a meaningful lyric” and an artist in touch with the material, those are the secrets. Bing had that secret down to a science.

One of the things I was most interested in is what the Crosby Christmases were really like. We as the audience had seen for many years in a row, the gorgeous family all talented and dressed in their Sunday best! You could see the love that the children and Kathryn had for Bing, Mary Frances in particular. She beamed at him, arms draped around his neck. Mrs. Crosby explains in her book that Mary Frances was quite an expert entertainer even at that tender age. While she loved her Dad, and the feelings we saw were genuine, she’d also figured out that the camera was on Bing for most of the time, so if she was snuggled in next to him, arms around his neck she’d be on camera too! I wanted to know what the real home Christmases were like! Mrs. Crosby said that “for us, Christmas could happen at anytime of the year. We filmed the show at different times of the year and always had the true Christmas spirit. I remember one year we filmed in Sun Valley, Idaho in April and had all the real snow we could stand!” She described the Christmases that the family shared in their Hillsborough, CA home as large affairs with as many as sixty guests, all Crosby’s and Grandstaff’s (Mrs. Crosby’s maiden name). She fondly recalled decorating their Christmas trees with homemade ornaments made from Styrofoam with family pictures glued to them. And every year, Alan Fisher, longtime Crosby butler, would hoist Mary Frances by the ankles to the top of the tree to place the star.

Bing was truly a man’s man. He loved hunting and fishing and all things that the great outdoors had to offer. I remember in the early seventies watching ‘The American Sportsman” on ABC. Bing and his longtime friend Phil Harris were bird hunting. Bing seemed so real! So down to earth! So incredibly humble and unimpressed with his stature in the entertainment world. This may have been why we loved him so, his cool and reachable nature, and his everyman persona. Bing lived everyday of his life, even till his last. Mrs. Crosby details a conversation that he had with his doctor a short time before he died. Somehow Bing knew what was coming, and asked his doctor to take care of Kathryn and the kids. Rather than be afraid to leave the house Bing lived and lived big. On the day he died, he played a full eighteen holes of golf even beating some of the club champions. One of his foursome described him favoring his left arm a little but that they had no warning of what was to come. Bing lived until that moment when he died. If I could pick the way to go when it was my turn, it would not be any different. Doing what I loved, living the good life until it was time to go.

I spoke earlier of Mrs. Crosby’s unselfish sharing of her life with Bing. Currently, with Mrs. Dolores Hope as producer, Mrs. Crosby is rehearsing a one woman show that she will be performing next week at North Hollywood California’s El Portal Theater. They describe it this way:

The 2006 release of Hall & Oates first Christmas album is the focus of this year’s holiday tour by the group. The holiday tour starts November 20th in Chicago.

“Last year we didn’t tour the album — instead [we did] a lot of promotion for it,” Hall tells Billboard.com. “This year, we’re not doing much promotion and we are touring. It’s a holiday show. We’ll do the full album and then at the encore, a bunch of Hall & Oates songs.”

While “Home for Christmas” received a limited release last year through DKE Records, Hall says this season the 11-track album will be available nationwide. In 2006, the album’s lead single, “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear,” reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart. Hall says a new single, which has yet to be determined, will be released this holiday season.

“I think you can go two ways with Christmas music,” Hall says. “You can either go sort of the novelty way, the ‘I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus’ kind of crap, or you can go more into the true sense of Christmas way, which is a more spiritual thing. To me, this is the real essence of Christmas. That’s the path I chose for this piece, and I can do Christmas shows behind this for the rest of my life.”

Miss Patti’s Christmas is the first new Christmas album by Philadelphia native Patti Labelle in nearly two decades, since 1990’s Gamble & Huff-produced This Christmas, on Universal’s MCA label. The new album’s 10 songs intersperse Christmas classics (”It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year,” “Do You Hear What I Hear?”), contemporary numbers (remakes of the Emotions’ 1978 “What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas?,” 1995’s Richard Marx & Luther Vandross staple, “Every Year, Every Christmas”), and traditional material (”Jesus, Oh What A Wonderful Child” featuring the Soul Seekers, “Away In A Manger”). Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis co-wrote four holiday songs for the project: “Christmas Jam,” “Holidays Mean More To Me,” “It’s Going To Be A Merry Christmas,” and “Nativity.”

Miss Patti’s Christmas is her third album in three years for Def Jam’s Def Soul Recordings. It follows Timeless Journey (released May 2004, featuring the single “New Day”), and the Top 5 R&B Classic Moments (June 2005), an album of cover versions of some of Patti’s favorite pop and soul hits of all time, with her single remake of Aretha Franklin’s “Ain’t No Way.”

Miss Patti’s Christmas track listing:
1. Christmas Jam
2. It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year
3. What Do The Lonely Do At Christmas?
4. Holidays Mean More To Me
5. It’s Going To Be A Merry Christmas
6. Do You Hear What I Hear?
7. Nativity
8. Jesus, Oh What A Wonderful Child (featuring the Soul Seekers)
9. Every Year, Every Christmas

Sister Hazel is planning to do a special set of tour dates, dubbed the “12 Days of Christmas Tour 2007,” to celebrate the recent release of their holiday record, “Santa’s Playlist.”

The tour kicks off in late November and goes through the end of the year, and it features stops at a number of seated venues the band has not played in before, such as BB King’s in New York City, the Somerville Theater in Boston, and the Neighborhood Theater in Charlotte, to name just a few. For the 12 Days of Christmas Tour 2007 dates, the band plans to play all of the songs on “Santa’s Playlist,” as well as a handful of fans’ favorite rock hits. The first of the shows will be at the Performing Arts Center in the band’s hometown of Gainesville.

Kicking off the holiday festivities prior to the tour will be the band’s appearance at the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival in Chicago on November 17th. Joining KT Tunstall, Corbin Bleu and others, Sister Hazel will be performing on the The Harris Stage at Pioneer Court along Michigan Avenue in the afternoon (a 5-7 song rock set). The band is also slated to grace the WTMX-FM float in the parade, upon which they will perform acoustically. The parade is part of the evening festivities, during which Mickey Mouse and his pals from the Walt Disney World® Resort will illuminate over one million lights on 200 trees along The Magnificent Mile. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival is the first official nationwide event celebrating the holiday season and is held along North Michigan Avenue between Oak Street and the Chicago River. This year is the first time this magical event will shine on a national stage through syndicated national television broadcasts. The procession and fireworks will air in over 40 percent of the country between November 18th and December 25th.

“Santa’s Playlist” was released on September 25th, and it was recorded in response to countless requests from fans. The album incorporates classics and standards remade in their own unique way, obscure Christmas tunes, and several of the band’s originals. “Each of us got to bring in three songs and produce them,” explains guitarist Ryan Newell. “Being in a band with five equal voices, it was a great experience to see each one of us take turns in the producer seat,” adds vocalist/guitarist Drew Copeland.

11/27 Gainesville, FL University of Florida
11/28 Charlotte, NC Neighborhood Theater
11/29 Washington, DC 9:30 Club
